The Cachicata Trek—also known as the Cachicata Trail Trek Cusco—is situated in the Sacred Valley, near the district of Ollantaytambo, often referred to as the “living Inca city.” This enchanting trek leads you through less frequented areas away from the bustling heart of Ollantaytambo. The journey begins with the expansive terraces surrounding the main village itself. To access the quarry, our route takes us across the Urubamba River via an ancient Inca bridge, showcasing how these age-old foundations continue to support contemporary constructions.
As we trace the river’s path, we’ll reach the first natural spring, adorned with terraces and Inca “swimming” pools originally used for irrigation purposes. About an hour into our hike, you’ll notice the “tired stones”—the stones left behind before reaching their intended final destination. Soon after, we’ll venture into the primary quarry area of the Cachicata Trek, where stones were sourced for constructing the temples found at the Ollantaytambo archaeological site. The panoramic views of Ollantaytambo and the Sacred Valley from this point are simply breathtaking.
Additionally, this location offers exceptional vantage points, including the pyramid of Paqariqtampu and the majestic snow-capped peaks that surround the area.

We’ll kick off the day by picking you up directly from your hotel. After approximately 1.5 hours, we’ll arrive at the historic city of Ollantaytambo, marking the starting point of our hike. The trail will lead us upwards for about 4 to 5 hours in total, depending on our walking speed.
During the Cachicata Trek, the sweeping vistas of the Sacred Valley and the towering mountains beyond will unfold before us, offering breathtaking panoramic views. We’ll have the opportunity to see the paths where stones were transported and the numerous blocks left in their unfinished state. Additionally, we’ll encounter Chullpas—small tomb structures constructed to house mummies. These are traditionally believed to serve as guardian spirits for the local inhabitants and workers of the region.
Around midday, we’ll pause to rest and savor our packed lunch specially prepared for the Cachicata Trek tour. After soaking in the magnificent views and capturing memorable photographs, we’ll begin our descent back to Ollantaytambo. From there, our transportation will be ready to either return you to the historic city of Cusco or accommodate you in Ollantaytambo, based on your preference.
