Location and Starting Point: The Inca Quarry Trail to Machu Picchu is a captivating 4-day trek situated in the heart of the Sacred Valley of the Incas, commencing just outside the vibrant Inca village of Ollantaytambo.

In the early hours of the morning, we will journey to Soqma Village (elevation: 3,204 mts./10,512 ft.), a drive lasting approximately 1 hour and 45 minutes. This village marks the beginning of our hiking adventure. Upon arrival, we’ll assemble with our horses and muleteers, equip ourselves with hiking gear, and indulge in a hearty breakfast. Following this, we’ll commence our hike, traversing a scenic valley leading to Perolniyoq, a quaint Incan site nestled atop the mountain. Along the way, we’ll encounter a charming waterfall, offering a picturesque backdrop for photography.
Upon reaching the Incan site, our tour guide will provide insights into its historical significance. Subsequently, we’ll proceed to our lunch spot and first campsite, roughly an hour away. Here, we’ll relish a freshly prepared lunch consisting of a starter, soup, main course, dessert, and coca tea, all served in our dining tent with panoramic views of the surrounding breathtaking landscape.

After a satisfying breakfast to fuel us for the day’s journey, we’ll embark on our adventure. Initially, we’ll ascend along the trail towards the first pass, Pukaqasa (elevation: 4,379 mts./14,366 ft.), which will take approximately 3 hours. From this vantage point, we’ll be greeted by breathtaking views of the Urubamba Valley and distant snow-covered mountains. Descending from the pass for about 30 minutes, we’ll arrive at our designated lunch area.
Subsequently, we’ll follow a winding trail upwards to the trail’s pinnacle, Kuichikasa (elevation: 4,449 mts./14,596 ft.), offering mesmerizing panoramic views. After spending some time soaking in the scenery, we’ll begin a descent lasting around 2 hours and 30 minutes, leading us to the Incan marvel known as the “Gate of the Sun” or INTIPUNKU in Quechua. Here, we’ll be treated to awe-inspiring views of the Wakaywillka snowcapped mountain within the Urubamba range. Continuing our hike for an additional 30 minutes from Inti Punku, we’ll reach our next campsite, Choquetakarpo (elevation: 3,619 m./11,874 ft.).

Today’s journey leads us to the Cachicata quarries, a downhill hike that takes approximately 1 hour. Cachicata, situated 5 miles from Ollantaytambo, served as a primary Incan rock quarry where ancient artisans carved and polished stones to construct the Temple of the Sun in Ollantaytambo. Here, our tour guide will enlighten us with the rich history of this significant site.
Following our exploration of Cachicata, we’ll descend towards the Sacred Valley of the Incas for about 3 hours, reaching the vicinity of Ollantaytambo. We’ll enjoy our final lunch on the outskirts of Ollantaytambo town. In the afternoon, we’ll board our train bound for Aguas Calientes Town. Upon arrival, we’ll proceed with the check-in at the hotel that has been pre-booked for your convenience.

Crucially, we’ll rise at approximately 5:00 am to have breakfast and board one of the earliest buses to Machu Picchu. Starting the day early is essential to circumvent the large crowds and to experience the citadel bathed in the soft glow of morning light. Our guide will initiate the day with a comprehensive tour of the key sites, altars, and structures within Machu Picchu.
Throughout this exploration, our guide will impart insights into the history of this remarkable place and the civilizations that once inhabited it. If you’re still brimming with energy from the preceding days, this is an opportune moment to ascend either Huayna Picchu or Machu Picchu Mountain.
Upon concluding your visit to Machu Picchu, a bus will transport you back to Aguas Calientes for lunch. Following this, we’ll embark on a train journey to Ollantaytambo, and from there, continue our journey to Cusco via private transportation.
