The 4-day Salkantay Trek to Machu Picchu is a less-traveled alternative compared to the popular Inca Trail to Machu Picchu. It serves as the second choice for many travelers aiming to reach Machu Picchu on foot. Nonetheless, the Salkantay hike undoubtedly showcases the most breathtaking scenery the Andes has to offer, ranging from the Andean highland’s native forests to snow-capped peaks, glacial lakes, and cloud forests.
Primarily, the Salkantay trek is highly recommended for those eager to immerse themselves in the pure essence of the natural world. It provides a serene setting that allows you to connect with its healing properties and the myriad gifts it offers. Additionally, we offer an excursion to Humantay Mountain, a neighboring glacier to the Salkantay glacier. This journey promises an adventure that encapsulates the very best of the Andes in Peru.

Classic Salkantay Trek to Machu Picchu by departing from Cusco at approximately 4:30 am in our private van. We’ll head to Mollepata town (2,900 meters), reaching our destination by around 8:00 am. Upon arrival, we’ll take a break for any final supplies, a brief stretch, and restroom facilities. We’ll then continue our journey upwards in the private van to the trek’s starting point at Challacancha.
Upon reaching Challacancha, we’ll rendezvous with our support team, load our gear onto horses and mules, and commence our hike towards Soraypampa (3,900 m) by 9:00 am. During this segment of the Salkantay trek, weather permitting, we’ll enjoy panoramic views of the imposing Salkantay and Humantay mountains. By midday, we’ll pause for a traditional Peruvian lunch. Post-lunch, our path will lead us further up to Humantay Lake, renowned for its turquoise waters located at the glacier’s base. Upon returning to our camp, your tents will be set up and dinner will be served.
Accommodation: Campsite in Soraypampa

Today, on our Salkantay trek, you’ll experience a dramatic shift in nature, transitioning from rugged alpine terrains to snow-capped peaks and tropical zones. After enjoying a hearty breakfast crafted by our local Salkantay trekking chef, we’ll tackle the most challenging segment of the Salkantay trek to Machu Picchu. We’ll kick off the hike around 7:00 am, heading towards Salkantay Pampa and then veering left to ascend towards the imposing face of Salkantay. By midday, we’ll reach the trek’s pinnacle at an altitude of 4,600 meters.
The vistas from this vantage point are simply awe-inspiring, encompassing not only the Salkantay glacier (6,264 m) but also the neighboring peaks and valleys below. Around 1:00 pm, we’ll pause for lunch at a location known as Wayraqmachay. Following a 3-hour trek, we’ll arrive at our campsite in Challway (2,920 m). Upon reaching the camp, the Salkantay trekking team will have your tents prepared and your duffel bags ready. Later in the evening, we’ll unwind from the day’s trek and enjoy a communal dinner at our camp in Challway.
Accommodation: Campsite in Challway

Today’s journey takes us through the lush vegetation of the high Andean jungle, passing by fields where fruits thrive at this altitude. Bananas, coffee, avocados, and cacao are among the most commonly grown crops in this region. Additionally, the landscape transforms into one adorned with waterfalls, orchids, and a variety of birds. We’ll pause for lunch in the community of Sayahuaco (2,064 meters / 6,771 feet), followed by a brief car ride to the Hydroelectric Station. From there, we’ll continue on foot to Aguas Calientes (2,050 meters / 6,571 feet), a journey of approximately 3 hours.
NOTE: There’s an option to take a short train ride instead of walking, available at an additional cost of $31. Upon reaching Aguas Calientes, we’ll check into our hotel and have some time to relax before reuniting for dinner at a local restaurant.

On this significant day, we’ll explore one of the world’s wonders, the awe-inspiring city of Machu Picchu. We’ll rise early for breakfast and board the bus to Machu Picchu. If we’re fortunate, we’ll witness the first rays of the sun as dawn breaks, illuminating this enchanting mountain. Subsequently, a guided tour through the Sanctuary will span approximately 2 hours. Afterwards, we’ll return to Aguas Calientes for lunch and relaxation before catching our late afternoon train to Ollantaytambo. Upon reaching Ollantaytambo, our ground transportation will be ready to transfer us back to Cusco and to your hotel.
